Language is a subject that defines us as individuals, but at the same time unites us. For me, its influence and power is overwhelming and so complex and influential, that I find it completely intriguing. This explains my decision to study English language and literature at the University of Chester as I wanted to understand and study comprehensively, the language that is primarily used all over the world. During this time, I studied modules such as the history of English, phonology, second language acquisition, the power of language, Romanticism and Victorian literature. Collectively, these modules have given me insight to society and enriched me personally. Studying a combined degree has enabled me the opportunity to analyse texts from both a literary and linguistic perspective. However, what really interests me is how writers use language in order to simulate our imagination and impress readers’ thoughts.
After graduating in 2013, I began to form an interest in the field of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). In the summer of 2013, I continued to study intensively to gain a Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) and training in the International English Testing System (IELTS). Teaching in this specific area in education, allowed me to influence students whose first language is not English. After gaining this qualification, I worked at Manchester Central School of English teaching general English in speaking, listening, reading and writing. This interest in EFL informed my decision to study Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) at Masters Level at Manchester Metropolitan University. The modules studied on this course focused on, second language acquisition, EFL pedagogy, curriculum design and technology in TEFL. After graduating in the summer of 2014 with a first class degree, I worked as an associate lecturer and language tutor within the language department at the University. Here, I worked with a range of international students teaching English for academic purposes, study skills and English skills for work, to help improve their language skills so that they would be able to understand English and be understood.
I have also gained experience as a Maths and English tutor for and specialist tuition company called Explore Learning as well as working as a visiting lecturer, teaching English language on the University of Chester’s undergraduate degree programme and research associate for the University of Chester before applying to qualify to teach in mainstream education through the Schools Direct programme. This decision stems from a belief that all students have an undiscovered passion and talent in life, and with the correct support and education, this can be nurtured into greatness. Teaching at King’s is not only rewarding but also highly satisfying as it enables me to be a part of an individual’s academic success. Here, I feel I can offer potential students a sense of understanding and appreciation as to the power of the English language. In addition, I aim to inspire students to read actively, learn interactively and more importantly, equip them with the fundamental skills to engage within the wider world beyond the realms of secondary education.
In my spare time, I like to stay active by attending fitness classes and going the gym. I also enjoy spending time with family and friends, travelling the world exploring new environments, reading and researching issues relating to pedagogy and the English language. As an English practitioner, I hope to instill the same love and passion I have for English, to every student I may teach or interact with.
